Moving to Oxford?

Located in the South West and the main county town of Oxfordshire, Oxford is a University town situated at the confluence of the Rivers Thames and Cherwell. The buildings in the town reflect architecture dating back to Anglo-Saxon times giving it the nickname ‘the city of dreaming spires’. Its University is one of the most popular while at the same time being the oldest in the English speaking world. It was first occupied in Saxon times and the University first receives a mention during the 12th century. Much later, in the early 20th century the city underwent considerable industrial and commercial growth, combining well with the city’s more traditionally educational roots.

Oxford is well connected by infrastructure too as the city is close to the A40 (leading to London) and the M40 south too. There are numerous other roads in the Oxford area too leading to most of the major towns in the region as well as bigger towns in the North like Birmingham and Manchester. Oxford railway station is a busy one, offering trains to places as far afield as Manchester and Edinburgh as well as trains to other parts of the South West and of course London itself.

Modern Oxford still retains a lot of its old charm and the general trend is to keep traffic largely out of the traditional city centre by pedestrianising much of these parts. There are many options for shopping or stopping for lunch and coffee with Broad Street being probably the best known old shopping area. Located to the west of Cornmarket Street (itself an important shopping street); the Clarendon Shopping Centre is the main town centre mall offering all the usual retail facilities in pleasant surroundings. Generally though, as you’d expect, Oxford is massively well serviced by retail and eating and drinking facilities. It has an enormously mixed population by virtue of its University connections not to mention its somewhat affluent indigenous inhabitants. The city centre of Oxford, while being relatively small is an excellent source of social activity, and for that reason the local council plan to keep it that way by, among other things ; making the centre a bus free zone.

The city of Oxford is vitally important for tourism reasons also with thousands of visitors travelling from all over the world to see the historic University buildings and also just taking in the idyllic nature of the town, which encapsulates exactly what England is all about. Punting on the river is a popular past time and the university have their own rowing club, well known for contesting the annual University Boat Race on the River Thames with their rivals Cambridge. There are theatres, museums and numerous other venues of cultural interest in this City and it is truly blessed with some of the most attractive buildings England has to offer. As both a place for a day trip, a longer holiday or indeed a place to live, Oxford would be pretty high up the desirability list and consequently property here is on the expensive side, but well worth it.
