Moving to Plymouth?

Plymouth is a coastal city in Devon, located on the South Coast and around 190 miles south of London. It is built between the mouths of the Rivers Plym and Tamar, and has a history steeped in all things nautical with shipbuilding and ferries dominating. In recent years it has become increasingly popular with service industries.

Dating back to the Bronze Age, Plymouth became well known when the Pilgrim Fathers left there in 1620 for the New World establishing Plymouth Colony, the second English settlement in the United States of America. Later, throughout the Industrial Revolution Plymouth grew as a renowned shipping port handling passengers and imports from the USA as well as being the site of construction for vessels from the Royal Navy. Its naval importance led to serious bombing damage during the War; indeed after 1945 much of the city was rebuilt. Today it retains that nautical identity but combines that with a service base and a thriving University population.

Getting to Plymouth is relatively easy, despite its southerly location. The M5 motorway is easily reached giving access to the national motorway network generally and there are good road links in the immediate region linking Plymouth to Cornwall and other cities in the area such as Exeter. Rail services are available at Plymouth Station offering services by South West Trains and there are regular ferry crossings to France. Finally, Plymouth Airport offers a small range of mainly Air South West services across the UK and also parts of France,

Plymouth of today, while still having a maritime influenced economy (Devonport Dockyard is still the city’s largest employer), now has influence from other industries such as healthcare, engineering and medicine as well as more general service sector businesses. The centre of the town is dominated nowadays by a post-war shopping area with much of it pedestrianised. In 2004 the Drake Circus Shopping centre was completely redeveloped offering modern indoor retail facilities and the whole city will undergo a larger development plan called the Plymouth Vision, adding shopping centres, dwellings and a new cruise terminal to the town’s portfolio. Adding to the City’s cultural mix are some 3000 students attending the University, which relies heavily on maritime orientated courses and also three other colleges of further education offering a broad range of study ranging from engineering to new media.

On an entertainment level, Plymouth has a thriving nightlife mainly centred on Union Street; formerly a popular drinking area for sailors. Also, there are a good range of restaurants as well as theatres and cinemas. Plymouth Argyle plays football in the city and both basketball and rugby are played in the city also giving Plymouth a nice spread of interests.
