Moving to Portsmouth?

Famous for being the UK’s only island city and located on the island of Portsea , Portsmouth has long naval traditions and is still home to one of the world’s largest dry docks. It has declined as a naval base in recent years but remains an important dockyard and base for the Royal Navy. The suburbs of Portsmouth arguably form a conurbation stretching along the A3 road towards nearby Southampton.

There have been settlements in this area since Roman times there is little doubt, but the City is generally thought to have been founded properly in 1180. In the 18th Century ships sailed from Portsmouth to establish the first European colony in Australia and the city was given full city status after much pressure, in 1926.It’s naval significance resulted in serious bombing damage during the war and much of the housing stock had to be rebuilt afterwards, so great was the damage. This resulted in new suburban communities being established on the outskirts of what we consider the city of Portsmouth.

Getting to Portsmouth, despite its water surrounded nature is quite easy, mainly due to its long standing military importance. There are three main roads connecting the island to the mainland, the most well known being the A3 which runs all the way to London. There are also several mainline railway stations carrying services all over the South, including into London at Waterloo. There are also ferry links from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight as well as other destinations in Europe. The nearest Airport is located at nearby Southampton.

Southampton nowadays is undergoing some fairly ambitious development proposals, aimed at further enhancing its classy image and establishment reputation. An existing city centre landmark; The Tricorn Centre is being demolished and replaced with a brand new shop, apartment and hotel complex due to be complete in 2010. There is , in addition to that, a housing boom in Portsmouth meaning that former industrial and commercial sites are undergoing conversion to make new and desirable homes for the ever increasing population. Portsmouth FC also intend to move away from their traditional home to a new site on reclaimed land.

In the city centre now, shopping is centred around Commercial road but there are numerous other shopping pockets such as the upmarket Gunwharf Quays, home to many designer stores, restaurants and a cinema complex. Also there are other shopping developments such as Historic Dockyard and Ocean Retail Park all adding to an already impressive array of attractions. Portsmouth has also theatres, a university and lots naval orientated places of interest which all add up to it being an exciting and rapidly expanding city with a promising future. Contracts secured at the naval docks ensure a working future for years to come, and this kind of security is a great platform for growth.
