Moving to Preston?

Located in Lancashire, and on the North bank of the River Ribble, Preston is part of the wider Preston area having officially become a city in 2002. Located at the top of a hill in the Pennines and showing evidence of an existence in Roman times, Preston was really just a market town in the 12th Century and only became more synonymous with the textile industry later, particularly during the Industrial Revolution when it became a boom town with a rapidly expanding population as a result. As with many industrially orientated cities of the era, a period of decline would occur,

The Preston by-pass opened in 1958 was the first stretch of motorway in the UK and nowadays it is part of the M6, meaning that getting to and from Preston by road is remarkably easy. The reason for the by-pass was to ease traffic pressure on the town centre, particularly tourist traffic bound for nearby Blackpool and also the Lake District. As well as the M6. There are three other motorways that terminate near the city, giving it excellent infrastructure. By rail, this is also the case as Preston is a stop on the major West Coast main line with regular services to London Euston in the South along with Edinburgh and Glasgow in the North.

Nowadays then, Preston is a major centre of activity for the British Aerospace Industry being a home to BAE Systems; the UK’s main aircraft design and development companies. Along with this major employer, Preston also has several other large companies calling it their home. Since being granted its City status, Preston has been the target of numerous developers with a particular emphasis being placed on creating desirable housing for the city’s growing and increasingly affluent population. The heart of Preston as it stands now is around Fishergate and Friargate which are both thoroughfares offering shops, bars and restaurants very close to the city centre. There are two main malls; Fishergate and The Mall and these both offer recognised shopping brands in an indoor environment. Slightly more unique and specialised is the Miller Arcade; a selection of unique shops housed within a listed building and offering an interesting departure from the more recognisable brands. Generally though, Preston has a very acceptable range of shopping and restaurant facilities and the general curve is likely to be an upward one, given that the city is being lined up for such large scale redevelopment.

Sport and leisure is important to the Preston area too and they are represented by Preston North End FC, one of the first teams to be founded and the first to be crowned English champions. Things haven’t been quite so successful in recent years but you always suspect that they may be something of a sleeping giant. It’s ties with important industry and the resulting development suggests that Preston has a bright future, which given its industrially dependant heritage is good news.
