Moving to Ripon?

Ripon is a very pleasant market town in North Yorkshire with a cathedral, located in the Borough of Harrogate in. Situated on the River Ure, it is a small commercial town as well as a popular tourist destination given its proximity to Fountain’s Abbey and nearby Studley Royal Park. Ripon’s origins can be traced back to the foundation of the monastery there sometime during the 7th Century. However in 948 the town and the monastery were burned to the ground, prompting a rebuilding process conducted largely by the Archbishops of York. Later in 1318, Ripon narrowly escaped being burned again when a large payment was made to avert such acts, when the Scots invaded England. The city’s only real involvement with industry came during the 15th century but this practice was almost gone by the next century after Ripon was visited by historian Leland. The manufacture of spurs succeeded that of cloth but that too was more or less finished come the middle of the 18th century.

Being located in what is a fairly rural are; Ripon has acceptable transport links with the surrounding towns in its neighbourhood. By road, Ripon is linked to Harrogate via the A61 in the south and the A1 main route to the North. Sadly, having had a station in the past, Ripon joined the increasingly large list of cathedral towns which were to have their railway links removed during the late 1960’s. While reconstruction of the railway line is far from impossible, it is highly unlikely given that part of the city’s bypass route uses the old line and the former station is now completely surrounded by housing.

The Ripon we find today is a delightful country city, with many nice shops and restaurants blending in perfectly with the historical buildings of the past. There is a market every Thursday in the town square; a common feature of many Yorkshire towns and this is a tradition which has endured for many years now. The main focus of the city centre is the square and the streets around it such as Kirkgate; and it is here that the focus of retail can be found. It’s a mixture too with small independent boutiques sitting comfortably alongside more recognised high street names. Shopping is not the selling point however and in any case, the much larger centres of Harrogate and Leeds are easily reachable, offering vast choice on a far larger scale.

Ripon Racecourse is an absolutely delightful summer racing venue, located on the edge of town. It is a regular venue for high-quality flat horseracing events in the summer months and a really great day out. When you come, you’ll find a nice range of pubs and restaurants to try too, all in keeping with a delightful country city.
