Moving to Salford?

Salford is a large metropolitan area close to Manchester beside the River Irwell. It became a factory town during the 18th and 19th Century, acting as an inland port serving the spinning industry. Salford Docks became an important dockyard serving the nearby Manchester Ship Canal. Population had simply exploded in this area until the end of the 19th century when it became vastly overpopulated and subject to both substantial crime and poverty. Industrial decline during the 20th century saw Salford’s role as both an industrial centre and important dock threatened.

Getting to Salford shouldn’t be difficult as its role as a port and in industry mean that it is well served by communication networks. The proximity to Manchester and consequently the M6 and M62 roads give the Salford area ready access to the national motorway network. Additionally, buses run regularly to Manchester as well as the Manchester Metro-Link light railway system.

The demise of industry in Salford gave way to much of the city’s Victorian slums being pulled down and replaced by far less attractive high-rise accommodation, particularly during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Consequently, there is a really mixed demographic here with some affluent areas being very close to some of the UK’s least privileged neighbourhoods. Gradually, however a large scale regeneration plan is kicking in, aiming to bring Salford up to modern standards and offer a solution to the chronic housing problems which have plagued this area for decades. The Greengate area has had specific targeting in the shape of a bold plan to establish apartments, hotels and shops as well as a new feature square. Part of the old canal area; Middleford Locks is to be developed into a new housing area offering quality, trendy almost housing.

The inner city part of Salford close to Manchester city centre is in dire need of renovation and the existing shopping facilities are simply not up to modern standards at all. There has already been substantial riverside development at Salford Quays and some major companies now have offices in the area; IBM and McDonalds for example. The general trend is definitely of an upwards nature and the fact that Manchester nearby is undergoing its own regeneration should only help re –establish Salford as a place in its own right, not just an attachment to Manchester. This type of identity crisis is not uncommon in former-industrial towns who often struggle to fill the gap of what fuelled their previous economies. Salford has the ability to re-establish itself as a new source of service orientated business growth with waterfront locations proving very popular nowadays with companies seeking to relocate from London to a new developing area where rentals are perhaps more lenient. As an individual moving to the area, it’s encouraging to know that a lot of the old Victorian terraces are being replaced by much more modern and attractive housing options making the future for Salford considerably brighter than it has been of late.
