Moving to Sheffield?
Sheffield is a large urban development located in the West Riding part of
Yorkshire and covers a wide area nowadays. With a history firmly rooted in
industry; specifically British Steel, it has developed more recently into an
important commercial and residential centre. Built at the confluence of no
less than five rivers, much of residential Sheffield is located on the hill
areas surrounding the main part of the traditional city. It should come as
no surprise then that with so much water about, Sheffield has around 2 million
trees at the last count.
Occupied probably since the last ice-age, Sheffield sprang to prominence
during the industrial period when it became synonymous for great advances in
steel manufacture, the quality of which was much better than elsewhere. Much
like many towns founded on heavy industry, decline came during the 20th century
and in fairness Sheffield was slower than most to replace what the industry
once brought to the local economy but gradually over time, regeneration
occurred probably helped by the World Student Games in 1991 with, for example
a new shopping centre (The Meadowhall) being located on a former steelworks.
Regeneration is ongoing too as many of the more run-down parts of the city
centre are being upgraded.
Getting to Sheffield is relatively easy actually, given the main
North-South A1(M) passes very close-by, also connecting Sheffield to the East
coast and Doncaster via the M18. By rail the Midland Mainline Railway links
Sheffield to the East Midland and also London, as well as numerous smaller
cross-country links. Road links to neighbouring towns and cities such as
Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Wakefield are good , as are road
connections. Air travel is available locally too at nearby Doncaster
Sheffield airport which is mainly serviced by ‘budget airlines’
Sheffield offers a wide range of living options, a lot of it in the
suburban areas overlooking the main part of the city. It’s largely industrial
past has thrown up great rows of terraced houses, probably due for an upgrade
but at the same time, good value.
Sheffield city centre nowadays is a thriving retail and commercial centre
with many high street stores and indoor malls within close proximity of the
tow centre, as well as numerous out of town retail developments; the
aforementioned Meadowhall being the best known.
Sheffield also has its share of culture, being home to several theatres and
museums not to mention Sheffield Hallam University which services a large
student population.
Sport is a key part of Sheffield too, with two rival football teams as well
as Don Valley athletics stadium, the UK’s largest athletics venue holding
25,000 spectators when full. A city very much on the up.
