Moving to Southampton?

Located around 100 km South West of London, Southampton is a coastal city and the main town in Hampshire. It is close to the New Forest and sits at the northern point of Southampton water at its meeting with the Rivers Test and Ichen. Archaeological finds in the area would suggest that there has been habitation in the area since the Stone Age but it wasn’t until 1066 that the city became a major transit port from England to Normandy, trading French wine in exchange for cloth and wool. Later again during the Middle Ages, shipbuilding became an important part of the local economy and many famous vessels have been built here, most famously the Titanic. The Victorian era witnessed the towns most rapid development too with much of the fine housing that is still there today originating during that period.

Because of its role as a major port, Southampton has always enjoyed good transport links with the rest of the country and that’s still the case. The M3 links directly to London whereas the M27 runs along the South Coast, connecting the major towns along that route. Rail links are good too with the city enjoying regular services to its immediate area, London and far beyond. There is a small airport also, hosting services to UK and some smaller destinations and finally the port itself while no longer hosting cross-channel services, remains a port for internal ferry companies to destinations such as the Isle of Wight.

While still a maritime centre, modern Southampton has witnessed a more diverse range of industries coming to the city in recent years with particular emphasis on chemicals and electronic engineering. Because the traditional maritime industry was never moved from the centre of town, there is less scope for wholesale redevelopment in Southampton than in other comparable cities like Bristol for example. That said, in recent years there have been important plans developed to make the city a more attractive and viable commercial centre with a strong retail draw too. The West Quay Shopping Centre is by far the largest in town and hosts many shops and restaurants typical to this kind of modern mall. This was the first part of a three phase plan that will later include hotels, casinos and more retail with a completion date earmarked for 2012. The waterfront is also targeted for renovation with new apartments, smaller shops and some office space too, incorporated into the city’s first skyscrapers. If all the plans come off Southampton will further cement its position as one of the South Coast’s most important cities and one which has successfully bridged the gap between an industrial past and a future focused on more modern ideas. Throw in a popular University, good sporting pedigree and great access to major cities, beaches and the surrounding countryside and you have a most attractive proposition.
