Moving to St. David's?
The’ city’ of St David’s is located in Pembrokeshire on the far south- west coast
of Wales. Granted city status by Queen Elizabeth II because of the presence of the
cathedral St David’s is in reality no more than a small but very attractive village.
Situated within on the River Alun within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park,
St David’s is surrounded by spectacular coastal scenery renowned for its beauty
and the abundance of wildlife. Whitesands Bay, one of the many beautiful beaches
in the area, carries the prestigious ‘European Blue Flag Award’ for being clean
and up to the highest standard.
St David’s Cathedral itself has been the dominant presence here since the 12th century
and was a popular pilgrimage destination throughout the middle ages and indeed remains
so to this day attracting thousands of tourist visitors on an annual basis. Adjacent
to the cathedral stand the rather impressive ruins of the medieval Bishops Palace.
As the ecclesiastical centre of all of Wales and the reputed final resting place
of St David himself, this charming town may not be large but is certainly significant.
Tradition states that the Saint was born in a location ten minutes from the current
town centre around 500 AD and it was later declared that two pilgrimages to the
city were equal to one to Rome, and as a result vast numbers of pilgrims descended
on the city over following years. Nowadays this drawing card combined with the popularity
of the Pembrokeshire coast in general make this a much visited, though rather remote
outpost of Southern Wales.
Getting there isn’t a problem, though due to its relative isolation, there isn’t
what you’d call a vast choice of methods at ones disposal. The main coastal road
to service the town is the A487 which is really the only major way in and out of
St David’s. By rail, there are train services available from nearby Fishguard and
also Haverfordwest, which in turn will offer connection to bigger centres within
Wales as well as the South West of England and ultimately London too.
St David’s nowadays then is a fairly sleepy and attractive little community set
in an area of stunning natural beauty. There is a small but adequate shopping focus
too with a distinct emphasis on boutique type shops and art galleries with the odd
coffee shop/restaurant thrown in too. Shopping would not be by any means the draw
though and that should be sought elsewhere.
