Moving to Stirling?

Stirling is a city and ancient borough in Central Scotland with the bulk of settlement being clustered around an ancient fortress. This fortress is known as Stirling Castle and is the main feature of this vastly historic town on the River Forth. It has always had significance geographically as being a gateway to the highlands, as well as a natural boundary between the lowlands and the highlands themselves. It is originally a Stone Age settlement and has been significant since at least the Roman occupation of Britain, with a naturally defensible hill now being the site for Stirling Castle. In the 19th century the city’s role as a port on the River Forth was significant in trade circles; particularly the tea trade with Ceylon at that time. However, because it was located close to some of the flattest lowlands in the area it became prominent as an agricultural market town, with farmers coming to the town to sell their goods.

Stirling Castle is without doubt the most recognisable feature; perched high on a rocky outcrop and visible from miles around, it has had an important role to play in Scottish history and close links with William Wallace himself.

As a result of this importance as a trade hub, Stirling has developed very good transport links with the rest of the country. The M80 and M9 motorways access Glasgow and Edinburgh; and there are good road connections with other towns in the area also. By rail Stirling can also offer inter-city rail links with many major cities nationwide, as well as local services also.

Modern Stirling has developed a significant retail centre nowadays to compliment its status as a market town. The addition of the Thistle’s Shopping Centre; a modern facility offering a wide range of shops and restaurants was the beginning and there have been further out of town retail additions to bolster the city’s retail strength. In addition to shopping, Stirling also has a significant footfall of tourists, mostly coming to see the castle and the Wallace Monument, a monument to William Wallace located nearby. The financial sector is also a significant employer in the city with several large insurance companies having offices here, giving the town’s economy an eclectic mix of retail, market and commerce. Additionally there is a large University presence which adds to the mix of residents within the town and serves to further fuel the city’s economy.

Sport and leisure is an important part of life in Stirling too with all major sports represented keenly. The outdoor life and access to the Highlands and all that they offer is a major plus, as are leisure facilities such as nearby Blair Drummond Safari Park; a great family day out.
