Moving to Sunderland?

Situated on the River Wear in Tyneside, Sunderland is a large centre of population. Originally a small settlement and fishing village, the town grew up as an important port trading both coal and salt. Later, during the 14th century, ships started to be built on the river thus giving Sunderland the core industry on which it relied for many decades. Shipbuilding was everything to the area but like most heavy industry, it experienced huge decline during the late 20th century, meaning that to survive the city had to find new sources of employment and a new identity.

Strangely , because of its isolated coastal location, there are no major motorways running near Sunderland itself. The most major road is the A19 which used to run through the city centre but now bypasses the town, meaning that a drive West is required to meet the main A1(M) heading to London in the South and Edinburgh in the North. By rail trains can be taken directly to destinations such as Liverpool and links can be made to the East Coast Mainline also. The Metro service, originating in nearby Newcastle has been extended however into Wearside, offering an excellent suburban communication service similar to London Underground but obviously on a smaller scale.

The decline of shipbuilding resulted in the development of both residential and industrial sites along the river Wear, all of which have greatly improved both the appearance and commercial viability of Sunderland. That’s only the beginning too as there are vast plans afoot to improve the whole neighbourhood with the influx of new , many of them operating in IT and similar fields, driving up the demand for new and more modern housing options, a more attractive alternative to the aging council estates. The town centre has an excellent retail core founded around the Bridges Shopping Centre which has recently been extended. All the usual high street names are present as you’d expect.

Leisure is important here too and in 2004, Stadium Village was created providing a new home; The Stadium of Light for Sunderland FC as well as a new aquatic centre nearby too. Sunderland while maybe not one of the most glamorous cities in England, will soon be at the cutting-edge of urban redevelopment and the improvement of the whole Wearside area could well become a blue-print for other similar towns whose industrial decline left them in dire need of a clear forward planning initiative.

Sunderland’s proximity to it’s bigger neighbour Newcastle will always act as a drawing card for the whole Tyne and Wear area, and as a result this corner of North East England is becoming an increasingly popular relocation option for both businesses and individuals alike.
