Moving to Swansea?
Situated on the sandy South Wales Coast, Swansea is the second biggest city in Wales
and being most heavily populated in North, South and Westerly directions spreading
from the city centre. Its early industrial origin was at the heart of the copper
industry, particularly during the 19th Century. The Gower peninsula, near which
Swansea is locate dates back to the Stone Age although archaeological finds are
rare in the area that we now call the city centre, suggesting that settlement there
came somewhat later. The true founders of the city of Swansea are thought to be
the Danish Vikings who at that time controlled a vast empire in Southern England
and what was later to become Wales.
Swansea didn’t really develop however until the Industrial Revolution reached Wales
when its port became used to market wine, wool, cloth and increasingly coal. This
availability of coal made the surrounding area an ideal site for copper smelting
mines and during the following decades this industry as well as the manufacture
of other metals really expanded.
Throughout the 20th century however industry declined causing much hardship and
leaving many derelict works in the area as well as mounds of waste products from
them. Additionally, extensive World War II bombing damage meant that little of what
was pre-war Swansea remains and most of its city centre is relatively new in comparison
to other cities which were less affected.
Swansea is very easily accessed as you’d expect and in fact the M4 motorway passes
very close-by, linking Swansea to Cardiff, Bristol and ultimately London too. There
are many other trunk roads nearby too, giving easy access to other parts of Wales
also. Swansea has a railway station too, connecting it to much of Wales including
Cardiff, itself on a direct connection with London Paddington. There is a small
provincial airport and a large marina offering berths for 100’s of pleasure-boats.
Swansea of today is a city in transition having reclaimed a lot of the land that
was once used for industry; several plans are in place as to how to use it best,
given that the majority of those employed in Swansea are engaged in the service
sector nowadays. The old town centre was in dire need of upgrading and as a result,
bold plans exist to completely facelift the entire central quadrant involving huge
retail presence as well as residential developments also. Additionally, street art
and just a general brightening up of the city is underway in an attempt to catch
up with Cardiff, a city which has been completely transformed in recent years.
That’s not to say that what is there isn’t of value, there is a vibrant night life
in the city with the majority of the action around Wind Street and Kingsway where
bars, nightclubs and restaurants can be found in plentiful supply. Wales in general
has a proud sporting heritage and Swansea is no exception; Swansea City Football
Club is fervently supported and of course rugby is a Welsh religion. In all, some
way behind Cardiff but certainly with potential to become another important city
in Wales after the bold plans for reinvention take effect
