Moving to Wakefield?

Located in the West of Yorkshire, Wakefield is a former industrial town which has undergone many changes over the years. Its early history was firmly rooted in the cotton industry, its mills serviced by the nearby River Calder. Coal mining became the main employer in the tow during the 20th century, but like most similar towns, industrial decline set-in, causing major unemployment and the need for renovation, following a period of decline. Known as The Merrie Town in the middle Ages, Wakefield has had its share of hard knocks but is definitely now clawing its way back, albeit at a slightly slower rate than some of its bigger Yorkshire siblings.

Getting there isn’t a particularly an issue either as Yorkshire in general is serviced by a good road network linking much of the county to major routes such as the M1, as well as cross-country links such as the M62. Additionally there are two railway stations in the town offering connection to both the East Coast mainline and to other local train stations like Leeds and Doncaster.

During the coal mining boom, Wakefield grew rapidly, enveloping lots of smaller peripheral towns and villages. In addition large council estates were built on the outskirts, designed to house the ever growing mine-working population. In the 1980’s, when mining declined, much of Wakefield experienced considerable degradation, and only now is it bouncing back, with many new developments being put in place to freshen the city up.

Trinity Walk, a 175 million pound development to the south of the city centre, is already underway, demolishing a former market and replacing it with a new custom-built covered shopping area. The Waterfront area will undergo considerable upgrading, incorporating both retail and industrial units. As well as these, there are a variety of other city centre upgrades either underway or about to begin, all aimed at breathing new life into a town which has several decades in the doldrums.

Shopping and nightlife are what you’d expect from a town of this size with many recognised retail brands located here. There is a thriving social scene too, with many of the bars and clubs located in the Westgate area, a popular social gathering street for people from both Wakefield and the surrounding region.

The city centre is host to a small art gallery and museum, focusing mainly on the hard realities of coal mining life. The National Coal Mining museum itself is located not far away. Also mentioned in the museum is the sport of Rugby League; something of a local tradition and still represented by local team Wakefield Trinity Wildcats. Athletics, football and cricket are also popular locally. In all Wakefield is a very traditional and typical ex-mining city, desperately seeking a new identity as an attractive place to live. The renovations underway and planned will go a long way to achieving that status.
