Moving to Worcester?
Located in the West Midlands; Worcester is the county town of Worcestershire situated
on the River Severn, with a historic industrial past. The bulk of the modern city
is located on the East side of the river and it has huge significance as the venue
for the final battle of the English Civil War. Its history as a centre of settlement
dates back much further however with evidence of habitation on the East bank of
the Severn dating back to Neolithic times.
The Romans turned Worcester quickly into a thriving centre for trade and manufacturing
to such an extent that by Medieval times Worcester was a major centre for the manufacture
of cloth but by the late 18th century, much of that industry was to be moved to
larger towns in the area such as Birmingham, which was now reachable via a canal.
Other industry such as gloves and sauce manufacture has been important for the city
but not to the extent that the survival of the city was at stake when inevitable
decline came.
The second World War saw Worcester as a major site for evacuation and the 1950’s
witnessed a large amount of demolition and re-development in the name of town planning,
so much so that only a small amount of the original medieval building core remains
nowadays.
Getting to Worcester is easy as the main M5 runs very close to the city, in addition
to numerous other trunk roads which link the city to the whole Midlands area. There
are also two railway stations and one can reach almost every major city, including
London itself by train from Worcester. There are also smaller, cross-country train
lines serving more rural areas such as the Cotswolds.
Nowadays Worcester retains some degree of industrial presence but to a much lesser
extent than during its hey-day. It is much more of a mixed economy now and as a
result the emphasis on retail is quite heavy, with numerous modern indoor shopping
centres.
The heart of the town is the High Street, where many large chain stores are represented
with stores. There is also a large outdoor market at Crowngate and Worcester would
actually be one of the more attractive towns in the Midlands, given its interesting
historical past and it’s forward thinking new developments. This mixture really
works well and as a result, the lack of a real industrial focus has been adequately
substituted with service based strength. Consequently, the transition from industrial
town to service and tourism centre has been rather a smooth one.
