Moving to Truro?
A thriving city in Cornwall, Truro is an important centre for retail, administration and some degree of commercialisation, while at the same time remaining very visually appealing. It is located around nine miles from the South Coast at the confluence of rivers which ultimately become the River Truro itself. The river valley forms a natural bowl around this ancient city, and as a result the town is prone to flooding; the worst of which occurred in 1988 causing great damage to the city centre.
There has been a town here since the 12th century when Richard Lucy, Chief Justice of England in the reign of Henry II, built a castle at the top of what is now Castle Street. Remains of the castle were found during excavations for the cattle market that was held there until recent years. It is now the site of the Courts of Justice, the County Courts for Cornwall.
By the 14th century Truro had developed into quite a busy port, with the movement of tin and copper being the main activity, once it was stamped locally. The onset of the plague in the latter part of that century however induced something of a mass exodus; with much of the town falling into considerable neglect as a result. It required a later petition in the 16th Century to Parliament to ensure that the town was re-established, and one that excused Truro residents from paying rent. Queen Elizabeth granted the town a charter which in effect facilitated self-government and from that point on Truro and Falmouth which it also oversaw, became thriving towns.
Truro is recognised as quite an important retail centre within Cornwall, and this comes as something as a surprise given that there are a few more populous cities in the County. However that is the case and it’s a really attractive town with high house prices and an increasing demand for new housing availability also. Shopping is great with a huge range of chain stores, independents as well as bars and restaurants. There is more than one indoor market with year round stalls and Truro is now becoming increasingly popular for its vibrant nightlife too, all to the benefit of the local economy. Not just that but the city is an increasingly popular for arts and entertainment, with the Lemon Quay being the main centre of all that kind of activity.
The famous Gothic revival cathedral is probably the city’s most recognisable feature though; rising 250 feet above the city with its impressive spire visible from all around the city. Truro is a very compact and able town, if that makes sense. It is well rounded in all aspects, offering tourism, shopping and also an administrative hub for Cornwall as a whole.
