Located on the edge of the Mendip hills, Wells is a small cathedral city in Somerset and has had that status since around 1205. The name itself appears to be derived from three wells which were located in the area dedicated to St Andrew which, at one time were thought to have curative powers. The Romans settled this town certainly but it only became of any real significance during Saxon times when a Minster church was founded here in 704. Later the cathedral was used to house troops and horses during the English Civil War and the cathedral saw action again when attacked during the infamous Monmouth Rebellion. Much later again, in fact during World War II, parts of Wells were used as Prisoner of War camps.

On the southern edge of the Mendips, Wells is fairly accessible. By road, the A39/A371 roads run nearby offering convenient links to the surrounding area but nowadays the road bypasses the town relieving a few of the traffic problems which were being experienced. The A39 goes in a North Easterly direction to Bath whereas the aforementioned A371 heads to Cheddar and Shepton Mallet. By rail Wells was well served too having formerly had three railway stations, until the situation was simplified somewhat by the creation of a link between two of them. This was not to last though and no railway services now run into Wells, passenger or freight.

Wells nowadays is simply a charming and rather quiet cathedral town with a very nice selection of shops and restaurants focused mainly on the main street and market place. As mentioned, the road bypass has meant that Wells is able to retain its pleasant charm without being ruined by through traffic and the associated noise. Due to the location of the cathedral and other historical buildings here; tourism is very much the main thing driving the local economy and Wells certainly receives its share of visitors on an annual basis.

Its proximity to other important tourist sites such as Bath, Glastonbury and Stonehenge means that it catches almost all that tourist traffic too. It has always had a rather up market image over the years, probably due to its historically ecclesiastical connections and consequently that is reflected in the grandeur of many of the houses and public buildings that can be found here. Technically it is the country’s smallest city but as such it is without doubt one of the most attractive with a charming centre and cathedral located in rolling Somerset countryside.
