Moving to Ely?

Ely is a historic Cathedral situated on the edge of a vast area of Cambridgeshire fenland. Called Ely, due to the numbers of eels which were to be found in the marshy local lowlands; the monks of the town were said to have paid their 11th Century taxes using eels as a form of currency! The foundations of the city lie in the foundation of an abbey there in around 673 AD. This abbey however was destroyed by Danish invaders in around 870 and it was to take another 100 or so years until a replacement building was to be put in place, in the current location. The cathedral of Ely, nicknamed ‘The Ship of the Fens’ due to the impressive view it offers from the surrounding countryside, was completed in 1351 as the man diocese in Cambridgeshire given that Cambridge itself has no cathedral of its own.

Ely is quite well connected too, given that by road the A10 to Kings Lynn runs very close-by, as well as the main A14 which gives access to the Midlands and beyond. Local roads offer easy access to pleasant local towns such as Newmarket; headquarters of horseracing and of course Cambridge itself. By rail, Ely is a stop on the mainline between London and Cambridge, and there are regular services as you’d expect on such a busy commuter service.

Located on the Great River Ouse; Ely used to be an island actually until during the 18th century it was to become quite an important port after the surrounding fenland were drained to facilitate this. That is no longer the case however and nowadays Ely has a large pleasure boating influence with several delightful marinas. The University of Cambridge boat club has a hut here and in actual fact the 1944 renewal of the annual University Boat Race took place on the Great Ouse; the only occasion it has not taken place on the Thames ( Oxford won..) The city also retains much of its old world charm with most of the shopping streets being narrow, cobbled affairs located reasonably close to the Cathedral itself. Like many towns of this kind, there is a local market held in the main square every Thursday and Saturday, offering fresh fruit and vegetables as well as meat and poultry from the surrounding countryside.

Ely, apart from being a market town for the local farming community also has significance as being a popular tourist destination, with many coming each year to see its magnificent cathedral which is by far one of the more impressive in the country. For that reason, and also its pleasant location in the Cambridgeshire countryside, Ely is a delightful little cathedral town within easy reach of bigger centres like Cambridge, not to mention good and regular access to London by train.
